SnoopMy is a free collection of online network and device information tools. What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network. Your public IP address is the address that websites and online services see when you visit them — it is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

There are two types of IP addresses in use today:

• IPv4 — the traditional format, consisting of four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 93.47.128.201). IPv4 addresses are 32-bit and support approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses.
• IPv6 — the newer format, consisting of eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons. IPv6 addresses are 128-bit and support a virtually unlimited number of unique addresses.

Your IP address can change over time — most residential ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses that may change each time you reconnect to the internet.

How accurate is the location detection?

SnoopMy detects your approximate location based on your IP address using geolocation databases. IP-based geolocation is generally accurate at the country and city level, but it is not a precise GPS location. The actual accuracy depends on your ISP and how recently the geolocation database has been updated.

If you are using a VPN, proxy, or Tor network, the location shown will be that of the VPN server, not your actual physical location. This is by design and is one of the main reasons people use VPNs.

Why is my location showing incorrectly?

Your location may appear incorrect if your ISP routes your traffic through a different city or region, if you are using a VPN or proxy, or if the geolocation database has outdated records for your IP range. Business and mobile connections are especially likely to show inaccurate city-level data.

How to hide your IP address

If you want to hide your real IP address and protect your privacy online, there are several methods:

• VPN (Virtual Private Network) — the most popular and effective method. A VPN routes your traffic through a server in another location, masking your real IP address.
• Proxy server — similar to a VPN but typically without encryption. Proxies are faster but less secure.
